Reiki and other healing techniques have been used for ages.
Origin of Reiki
The Reiki system of healing originated in Japan in the early 20th century. Although Reiki, the energy, may have been known and worked with before in history, the Reiki healing system as we know it originated about a century ago. Mikao Usui was a Buddhist monk who was interested in the miracle healings which were performed in ancient times. He believed that these healings had indeed occurred, but wanted to know how it had been done. In Tibet he studied sanskrit documents in which was explained about healing energies. He now had discovered how these energies could heal, but he did not have the ability to use these energies. Usui went to a mountain in Japan and meditated there for a period of three weeks. During this period he experienced energies in his body and he realized that these were healing energies. He then founded the Usui System of Natural Healing and started to pass on the gift of working with the healing energies. Usui initiated many students to work with the Reiki energy. Mikao Usui´s successor Chujiro Hayashi initiated Hawayo Takata, from Hawaii, who initiated 22 Reiki Masters in North America in the 1970's and 1980's.
In recently published books with translations of Usui works we can read what Mikao Usui thought about the teaching of Reiki. "From time immemorial, it has often happened that someone who has found an original, secret law has either kept it for himself or only shared it with his descendents....However, this is an old-fashioned custom from the last century, and therefore outdated. In times like these, the happiness of humanity is based on working together and the desire for social progress. This is why I would never allow anyone to possess Reiki just for himself! Our Reiki Ryoho is something absolutely original and can not be compared with any other spiritual path in the world. This is why I would like to make this method freely available to the public for the well-being of humanity. Each of us has the potential of being given a gift by the divine, which results in the body and soul becoming unified. In this way (with Reiki), a great many people will experience the blessing of the divine. First of all, our Reiki Ryoho is an original therapy, which is built upon the spiritual power of the universe. Through it, the human being will first be made healthy, and then peace of mind and joy in life will be increased. Today we need improvements and restructuring in our lives so that we can free our fellow human beings from illness and emotional suffering. this is the reason why I dare to freely teach this method in public." - Mikao Usui, 1925.
Recent Developments
Reiki was introduced in the Western world in the 1970's in North America. Since then the number of Reiki practitioners and teachers has steadily increased. During the last decades several Reiki Masters have developed new Reiki systems. Changes were made because of new insights in the way of initiations and healing methods. Although the energy that is worked with is the same in all these systems, the experience of the Reiki energy that is channeled can be different. The efficiency with which a person can channel Reiki energy depends on the Reiki initiation. The initiation is the process in which Reiki energies are transfered from the Reiki Master to the student. When the body is better prepared it will be able to channel the Reiki energies in a more efficient way, compared to a body that is not fully adjusted and prepared.
The Reiki system is not the only factor that determines how the body is attuned to the Reiki energy. The physical, emotional and spiritual state of a person influences the efficiency of the channeling of Reiki energy. Without doing Reiki initiation courses we can all channel Reiki energy, but usually this is done with a low efficiency because we are not ajusted to the energies. Remember that Mikao Usui, the founder of modern Reiki, did not receive an initiation as we receive it nowadays. During his meditations he received the gift of channeling the Reiki energy. As we grow spiritually we become more aware of the 'non-physical' world, and the Reiki energy is a part of that.
Choosing a Reiki system is a matter of informing yourself well, and most of all looking at what the Reiki Master and his/her students are able to do; do healings occur as those of Mikao Usui on a regular basis? I felt most attracted to the Tera Mai™ system. Kathleen Milner, who developed the Tera Mai™ system, is an internationally well-known Reiki Master. She has written some very useful books about healing methods that can be incorporated in a Reiki practice. She and her students are able to assist in the healing process as Mikao Usui was able to do. Moreover, the Reiki initiations in this system are performed in the same manner by all Reiki Masters, in contrast to the infinite different ways of initiation in other Reiki systems. For example, when Hawayo Takata introduced Reiki in North America, she taught something different to all of the 22 Reiki Masters she initiated; the Reiki breathing was only taught to some and to others no importance was given to this essential step in the Reiki initiation.
Tera Mai™ Reiki
Tera Mai™ Reiki was developed by Kathleen Milner, author of 'Reiki & Other Rays of Touch Healing' and 'Tera, My Journey Home'. The system is based on the original Reiki system (Usui System of Natural Healing) developed by Mikao Usui. Kathleen Milner was trained in the lineage of Iris Ishikuro, one of the 22 Reiki Masters initiated by Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki into the Western world. It is believed that when Hawayo Takata, the first person from outside Japan to be inititated in Reiki, was initiated, she was not taught all the knowledge of the healing system that was developed by Mikao Usui. Tera Mai™ Reiki integrates advanced initiation methods and new Reiki symbols in a complete and publicly demonstated healing system and is experienced as a more evolved and efficient healing system.
Tera Mai™ is a world wide protected trade mark (™). This was done so that everybody who wants to teach in this system is required to do the initiations the same as these are done by Kathleen Milner. Everybody who is interested in learning Tera Mai™ Reiki receives the same initiations, no matter which teacher is chosen.
You might wonder if the Tera Mai™ Reiki system is better than other Reiki systems. It is not a matter of being better. The other Reiki systems also work; healing has been performed in all systems, but with different efficiency and often not on a regular basis. Tera Mai™ Reiki is a healing system that has proven to facilitate healings as performed by Mikao Usui, and more. It is a complete healing system that can be used for the healing of our whole being in a more efficient way than ever.
